• 31. märtsil, algas Tallinnas, Välisministeeriumi suures saalis neljas iga-aastane rahvusvaheline konverents „NATO ja EL ümarlaud 2016“

    Eile, 31. märtsil, algas Tallinnas, Välisministeeriumi suures saalis neljas iga-aastane rahvusvaheline konverents „NATO ja EL ümarlaud 2016“, mida korraldatakse koostöös NATO peakorteri, Eesti Välisministeeriumi, Eesti Välispoliitka Instituudi, Friedrich Eberti Fondi, Suurbritannia Suursaatkonna, NATO Küberkaitsekoostöö keskuse ja Rahvusvahelise kaitseuuringute keskusega.

    Konverentsi esimese päeva põhiteemadeks olid NATO ja Euroopa Liidu koostöö hübriidsõja tõkestamisel; Euroopa Liidu uus globaalstrateegia välis- ja julgeoleku suunal, ning Varssavis toimuv NATO tippkohtumine. Paneeldiskussioonides said sõna rahvusvaheliselt tuntud eksperdid sh NATO Ühingute katuseorganisatsiooni (ATA) asepresident, professor Julian Lindley-French, Belgia alaline esindaja NATO sõjalise komitee juures, major Kurt Engelen, Chatham House Venemaa ja Euraasia programmi teadur, hr. James Sherr, Soome Rahvusvaheliste Suhete Instituudi vanemteadur, dr. András Rácz, ACOS strateegilise kaitsepoliitika osakonna juht, EL sektsiooni juures, leitnant-kolonel Hans Huygens, NATO StratCom kompententsikeskus asedirektor, kolonel Aivar Jaeski, ja paljud teised. Konverentsi avasid EV välisminister Marina Kaljurand ja NATO peakorteri esindja Dr. Gerlinde Niehus.

    Konverentsist võtab osa 31 riigi noored ametnikud ning diplomaatiatudengid, kes pärit nii NATO ja Euroopa Liidu liikmesriikidest, kui ka Idapartnerluse riikidest, Venemaalt, Iisraelist, Argentiinast ja Indoneesiast.

    Hetkel on käimas 2-päevane NATO töö simulatsioon Saka mõisas Ida- Virumaal, kus mängitakse läbi NATO komiteede töö ning major Kurt Engeleni (Belgia alaline esindaja NATO sõjalise komitee juures) juhtimisel mängitakse läbi ka fiktiivne kriisiolukord, eesmärgiga paremini mõista, kuidas NATO sellises olukorras käituda võiks.

    The main topics of the conference in the first day were „NATO and the EU: Tackling the Challenges of Hybrid Warfare Together”, “A New Global Strategy for the EU`s Foreign and Security Policy” and “The Warsaw Summit: Managing Threats from East and South”. Panel discussions were held by internationally renowned experts like Prof. Julian Lindley-French, Vice-President, Atlantic Treaty Association; Commander Kurt Engelen, Staff Officer Cooperative Security, Permanent Representation of Belgium to the NATO Military Committee; James Sherr, Associate Fellow, Russia and Eurasia Programme, Chatham House; Dr. András Rácz, Senior Research Fellow, Finnish Institute of International Affairs; Commander Hans Huygens, ACOS Strategy Defence Policy Division Chief, EU Section; Colonel Aivar Jaeski, Deputy Director, NATO Strategic Communication Centre of Excellence and many others. The conference was opened by Marina Kaljurand, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Gerlinde Niehus, Head of Engagements Section, Public Diplomacy Division, NATO Headquarters.

    The conference brings together about 30 young officers and the diplomacy students, who are from both NATO and the European Union member states, as well as the Eastern Partnership countries like Russia, Israel, Argentina and Indonesia.

    At the moment there is on-going two-day NATO work simulation at Saka manor in Ida-Virumaa, where there is played through the work of the NATO committees and as well as a fictitious crisis situation that is guided by Commander Kurt Engelen (Staff Officer Cooperative Security, Permanent Representation of Belgium to the NATO Military Committee) to get a better understanding of how NATO could behave in similar situations.

    “Women, peace and security” conference was held in Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 11th of March in 2016.The conference dealt with international experience in the role of women in peace and security, and Estonia’s contribution to this. Topics were discussed by foreign minister of Estonia Marina Kaljurand, Major General Tiiu Kera and ohter representatives from USA, Canada and Hungary, as well as Estonian diplomats, scientists and soldiers.
    In the beginning of the conference Marriët Schuurman, the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative, gave a video greetings to the conference.
