Estonia’s current contribution to  international operations

    Afghanistan, ISAF.

In 2009, approximately 150 defence Estonian soldiers participate in Afghanistan, in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF). The majority of the Estonian units are stationed in the Helmand province, Southern Afghanistan, as a part of the UK Helmand Task Force.

Not all Estonian soldiers in Afghanistan are located in the Helmand Province. Estonian staff officers participate both in the HQ Regional Command South in Kandahar and the HQ ISAF in Kabul.

    Bosnia and Hertzegovina, EUFOR-ALTHEA.

Estonian staff officers are currently serving in EUFOR-ALTHEA HQ in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. As the security situation has improved and EUFOR is being diminished, Estonia does not intend to contribute any units to the EUFOR-ALTHEA operation.

    Lebanon, UNTSO.

Currently, two Estonian military observers are serving in UNTSO, observing the situation in Southern Lebanon and the Golan Heights. UNTSO is the oldest operation in progress for the Estonian Defence Forces. Military observers have been present there since 1997 and there is no reason to expect their work to cease.

    Iraq

At the moment Estonia contributes to the NATO Training Mission in Iraq NTM-I, established by NATO in November 2004 at the request of the Iraqi Transitional Government. Three Estonian staff officers are currently serving in NTM-I HQ in Baghdad.

    Kosovo

At the moment, staff officers and a group-size unit ESTRIF (Reconnaissance in Force) are serving in Kosovo as the members of Multi-Natioanal Task Force North MNTF(N), Danish battalion; staff officers are also serving in KFOR headquarters in Priština.

The present mandate from the Parliament of Estonia, which allows up to 40 members of the Defence Forces to participate in peacekeeping operation in Kosovo, is valid until 31st December 2009.
